With a 400-MHz Pentium II, a 440BX chipset, and 64MB of SDRAM, the Presario 4880 screams; it's over 20 percent faster than Compaq's 333-MHz Presario 4860(reviewed last month).Unfortunately, the Presario 4880 doesn't have the peripheral support to compete with the fastest BX systems like the Gateway G6-400 and the Dell Dimension XPS R400. Its AGP 3-D graphics engine is a middle-of-the-road ATI 3D Rage Pro, so the Presario can't keep up with nVidia Rivaequipped machines when it comes to 3-D games. To make matters worse, the graphics chip is soldered on the motherboard and there's no external AGP slot, so there's no way to upgrade the AGP graphics hardware

Twelve months ago, $2000 bought you a full-featured family computer. Today, it will still get you the computer -- along with 200 beanie babies or a year's worth of gasoline. Don't pinch yourself; you're not dreaming

Games- Realistic 3-D games (such as Quake) are among the most demanding applications you'll find and require high-end CPUs and 3-D accelerators. | Video and Photo Editing- Working with video and still images means working with a lot of data, and that means coupling a fast CPU with a big hard disk. Visualization- Software that lets you render 3-D scenes, such as home improvement software, landscape design programs, and virtual walk-throughs, demand all the performance of a 400-MHz BX machine. Voice Recognition- Software that lets you dictate to your computer and have it respond to voice commands is here, but it requires a very powerful system to get real-time response.
